All about Kolkata destination:
Victoria Memorial
The second largest city of the country, Kolkata, located on the Hooghly river is an intellectual and
the cultural center that has produced the most amazing poets, painters and filmmakers in India. The city has been the capital of British India for most of the colonial era until the rising spirit of nationalism prompted those in power to move, first out of the city and eventually out of the country.  As the hub of intellect and the spirit of festivities, the city has appropriately dubbed the City of Joy. The grand colonial architecture of the old North Calcutta is contrasted with abject poverty, easily spotted by searching eyes. With historical universities and art galleries, the spirit of the city is old and predominantly delightful- local tea shops in every street serve as the soul of conversation and kind interaction. Book cheap flights to Kolkata from USA to experience the joy first hand.

When to visit:
It is best to visit the city when the sultry summer and heavy monsoons are over. The autumn brings with it a host of cultural celebrations and festivities. Depending on what sort of experience you are looking for, the months of October to March are a viable period for enjoyable weather. The lowest winter temperature varies from 6-11°C and is not too cold for travel.
Things to do:
There is never a dearth of places to visit or things to do in this idiosyncratic city. A true spirit of the
British Raj can be experienced at the Victoria Memorial, with an enriching museum inside. The Indian
Museum and the National Library are also must for a lover of education and architecture.
Tagore's House or the Jorashanko Thakur Bari serves as a dual attractionas the residential home of the most celebrated poet in Bengal while also offering a look into one of the post prolific families with feudal responsibilities. For a religious experience, visit the Dakhineshwar Temple and the Belur Math in the evening hours, to witness the sunset on the Ganges. One of the unique experiences in the city is the visit to Kumartuli, where generations of idol makers have sculpted clay effigies of demons and deities alike.
The Botanical gardens
The Botanical gardens in the city offer a great collection in the green department that should not be missed.
Traveling tips in the particular city:
hooghly bridge
The city of Kolkata is well connected by a network of on-road vehicles and also by the underground
metro service.
For information on bus routes, you can consult the kolkatabusroutes.com website, but it is best to confirm with local sources. Metro rail is an efficient way of getting around.
But both are crowded with the city's high population and are not recommended for tourists. Cab services like Ola and Uber are around, and the traditional yellow taxis are a fair option as well. The team that has long been a symbol of the city is not a great transport route, for it runs on select routes only and is extremely slow-paced. Hired cars are cheap and are a  reasonable way to get around the city for sightseeing.
